THE TIE THAT BINDS
East Lansing, Mich. | Nov. 19, 1966
Notre Dame 10, Michigan State 10, and the Irish took over, first-and-10 at their 30 with 1:15 to play. Irish quarterback Coley O'Brien ran a sneak into the line, and it dawned on a disbelieving Spartans team, Spartan Stadium, and national TV audience that Notre Dame coach Ara Parseghian had settled for not losing. "Tie, tie for Ol' Notre Dame," Dan Jenkins mocked in Sports Illustrated. Parseghian never lived it down.
