In 1961, Alabama's Darwin Holt broke the jaw of Georgia Tech defender Chick Graning on a Tide punt return. Cries of brutality descended upon Alabama coach Bear Bryant, especially in a 1962 story in The Saturday Evening Post. The Post then charged that Bryant and former Georgia coach Wally Butts conspired to fix a game in Alabama's favor. The coaches sued the Post and won six-figure settlements.
