STANDING TALL
New Orleans | Jan. 2, 1956
Pittsburgh never wavered. The Panthers, playing Georgia Tech in the 1956 Sugar Bowl in segregated New Orleans, played African-American star Bobby Grier. On Tech's first possession, Grier fell down in the end zone while covering receiver Don Ellis -- and got flagged for pass interference. Georgia Tech, from the 1, scored the only seven points of the game. Soon after, Louisiana Gov. Earl Long signed a law prohibiting racially mixed athletic contests.
